US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has landed in Taiwan.
Pelosi is the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and more importantly, third-in-command after President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Pelosi is the first speaker in 25 years, after Speaker Newt Gingrich made the trip in 1997, to visit Taiwan.
Beijing has strongly protested Pelosi’s Taiwan visit and issued warnings of a strong Chinese response.
Pelosi's visit actively negates the ‘One China’ policy instituted by American president Richard Nixon in 1972, as a precursor to the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
By that policy, designed to save Chinese face, America rather vaguely accepts the Chinese view that Taiwan is a part of China, while permitting America to engage with Taiwan and underwrite its security, equally vaguely.
Earlier, Zhao Lijian, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson had said that, “Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan would be a gross interference in China’s internal affairs, seriously damaging China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Her status as the No. 3 politician in the US means that her visit to Taiwan would be highly sensitive. It will seriously violate the one-China principle and damage China-US relations”.
