Introducing Art Walk, a new interview video series by Creative India. For the first episode Hari Kiran Vadlamani, Founder, Creative India speaks to Nalina Gopal the curator of ‘Symbols and Scripts - The Language of Craft’ at the Indian Heritage Centre, Singapre.
The show seeks to showcase the rich and diverse material heritage of the Indian diaspora. It emphasizes on the use of symbolism and scripts in craft objects and interprets such symbols and scripts both in the Indian tradition as well as in the Singapore Indian context.
Symbols and Scripts features an impressive showcase of close to 150 items, including a collection of 5,000-year-old artefacts from the Indus Valley Civilisation, displayed in Singapore for the first time.
The exhibition includes a specially commissioned contemporary installation by Singapore-based Indian artist and ceramicist Madhvi Subramanian, which fuses Indian and Chinese influences to tell the story of unknown labourers who were united by their shared experiences at the rubber plantations.
As part of the exhibition, 15 craftspeople from India will offer visitors the opportunity to witness ancient craft traditions such as Indian leather work for shadow puppetry, and calligraphy in over 14 Indian scripts.
