Karnataka government and defence ministry have reached a land swap deal that could lead to the completion of several infrastructure projects and ease traffic congestion, The Hindu Bussiness Line has reported.
The land swap deal was agreed to in a meeting held between the Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Chief Minister of Karnataka H D Kumaraswamy. The deal could help in completing several infrastructure projects of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) that could ease the city’s traffic congestion. Eight out of the ten projects that were discussed required permanent transfer of land. Around 209 acres of land will be allocated to the Defence Ministry in exchange for 45,165.84 square metres defence land, valued at Rs 282.09 crore.
“I have directed officials not to wait till the State government hands over land of equal value in exchange for defence land. As the projects have been pending for years, the land will be transferred without any delay for the benefit of the people,” Nirmala Sitharaman told the media.
The chief minister thanked the defence minister and affirmed the state government’s commitment to provide land as per Ministry of Defence guidelines.
The defence ministry will be giving a formal communication in this regard shortly. The state government and the defence ministry have agreed to set up a joint task force to resolve all outstanding matters amicably.
