On Sunday, 30 December, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented Andaman and Nicobar islands with several new green initiatives that aim to preserve the air quality and improve the overall quality of life.
A foundation stone for a gas-based power plant that’ll be built at Ferrarganj Tehsil has been laid by PM Modi. The Hope Town project will be carried out by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam, which is a fully-owned subsidiary of the state-run generation utility NTPC. The project is estimated to cost Rs 388 crore.
On 26 October, after power minister R K Singh had cleared a proposal for the 25-year power purchase, it was signed by the administration and handed over to the NTPC for implementation. Other private entities who presented proposals had been turned down stating that without a proper bidding process, no project would be allocated.
Furthermore, the PM flagged off 20 electric vehicles to increase green transport in the islands and encourage e-mobility. Apart from the above, solar induction cooking stoves have been distributed in Chouldari village and 99 tsunami shelter homes have been provided with the easy cooking facilities.
Times of India reported that the power plant will be built in 18 months that will light up Port Blair and South Andaman with 24x7 electricity.
