BJP Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Anurag Thakur on Saturday, January 19, was presented the Sansad Ratna Award for his performance as a parliamentarian. He has created history by becoming the first MP from the party, that too from north India, to have secured the award.
In 2010, the Sansad Ratna Awards were set up after a suggestion from former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam. The idea was to honour parliamentarians who perform.
Business Standard quoted Thakur as saying, “I am extremely delighted to receive this award as it is being given for distinguished performance under Jury Committee Special Award. Being a public representative, I have always attempted to raise my voice in Parliament for pertinent issues relating to Himachal Pradesh and national interest, at large. I would like to dedicate this award to the people of Himachal Pradesh for their continued support and faith in me.”
Back in 2017, Biju Janata Dal’s Bhartruhari Mahtab had been presented the award. Apart from the MP, Nationalist Congress Party’s Supriya Sule won the award. Indian National Congress’ Rajiv Satav got the award too.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
