The BJP candidate has maintained a lead on his Trinamool rival in the Lok Sabha constituency of Mednipur as BJP is on route to achieve its best ever tally in West Bengal.
As per the Election Commission website, the BJP candidate Dilip Ghosh has polled 65,288 as compared to his Trinamool rival who has polled Manas Ranjan Bhunia 58,582.
The Mednipur constituency had become infamous recently when three villagers were detained for chanting Jai Shri Ram, while the convoy of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee passed through a village in West Midnapore.
After hearing the chants, Mamata had got down from her car and yelled at the villagers. She had also proceeded to claim that the chants were abusive.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
