General category employees of the state government in Karnataka have filed a petition before the Supreme Court alleging that the government has violated its verdicts on reservations, Deccan Herald has reported.
They have claimed that constitution bench verdicts in M Nagaraj and Jarnail Singh cases have been violated by Karnataka government. The petitioners have challenged the ‘The Karnataka Extension of Consequential Seniority to Government Servants Promoted on the Basis of Reservation (To the Posts in the Civil Services of the State) Act, 2017’. As per the petitioners, the law has been passed to override the previous judgement of the Supreme Court.
They say that the government ignored cadre-wise strength, creamy layer considerations and impact of reservations in promotion over administrative efficiency. The case was heard by Justices U U Lalit and D Y Chandrachud.
Senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan, Shekhar Naphade, Puneet Jain and Kumar Parimal represented the case of petitioners. The petitioners were led by B K Pavitra. The state government was represented by senior advocate Basava Prabhu Patil.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
