A youth from Rajasthan was arrested for running a fake scheme luring gullible citizens into revealing their personal details in return for a free laptop, Livemint reports.
Rakesh Jangid, an IITian from 2019 batch, ran the fake website named ‘Pradhan Mantri Free Laptop Distribution Scheme- 2019’ through which he would run Google Ad-sense to make money.
Additional PRO, Anil Mittal, Delhi Police said, “A team of Delhi Police Cyber Cell on Saturday reached Rajasthan's Nagaur and arrested the accused, Rakesh, 23 from his residence.”
During interrogation, Rakesh said that he made the website to earn advertising revenue from increased website traffic. “He was aiming to capture personal data of millions of gullible citizens which could be later traded to various cyber-criminals to cheat victims and extort money from them on various pretexts,” Mittal added.
Rakesh, through the website, generated traffic by attracting people to his fake laptop scheme and earn money by running ads via the Google program. His site has garnered over 68,000 clicks and 1.52 million page views. He also used the social media platform apps like Instagram, YouTube and WhatsApp to offer his bogus scheme.
The website also used ‘Make in India’ logo and also the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photo to garner web traffic. Rakesh was arrested after the Police Cyber Cell received a complaint from the PMO office.
