India has backed Indonesia on its South China Sea dispute with China - the latest move in its diplomatic offensive against the neighbour. India went a step further and signed a joint declaration on maritime cooperation with Indonesia, with US, perhaps, being the only other country with which India has signed such a declaration in 2014 and 2015.
India’s move comes after Beijing maintained its opposition to the former’s membership of the elite Nuclear Suppliers Group along with stopping India’s bid to declare Jaish-e-Mohammed’s head Hafiz Saaed as a terrorist by the United Nations. This move is not the only one where India gave a hardened response to China.
Earlier in October, India quietly permitted US ambassador Richard Verma to visit Arunachal Pradesh. Then days after Verma’s visit, which China protested, India cleared a visit by the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, scheduled for March 2017.
Also last week, India backed Mongolia after China slapped a toll tax on trucks passing between the two countries in light of the visit by the Dalai Lama to Mongolia. Foreign ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup said India was ready to extend help to Mongolia because the new tax put pressure on the country’s economy.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
