Union Home Minister Amit Shah scripted history on 5 August 2019 as he moved the resolution to revoke the controversial Article 370, which provides special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
This announcement resulted in a major uproar from members of the opposition, whose leader Ghulam Nabi Azad had earlier started a ruckus, which resulted in a reprimand by the House Chairman Venkaiah Naidu.
The Chairman of the House had postponed all the zero hour submissions for “urgent legislative business” previously.
The speech is expected to end the suspense around the happenings in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The state has witnessed heightened security, house arrest of leaders like Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah, and imposition of Section 144 in Srinagar. Mobile Internet services have been jammed in the valley. Schools and colleges were ordered to remain closed.
In the morning Amit Shah, Prime Minister Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and others participated in a union cabinet meeting, after which all the members left for the Parliament. The opposition leaders also held a meeting at the chamber of Congress leader, Ghulam Nabi Azad, in the Parliament.

Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
