In a remarkable feat, the second week of January starting on 8 January witnessed national highway building across the country surge to a record hike of 534 kilometres, translating into whopping 76 kilometres a day, reports Times of India.
The overall national highway building between April 2020 to 15 January 2021 stands at 8,169 kilometres which is higher than 7,573 kilometres of national highways built in the same period in the previous financial year.
With the ongoing momentum, the Nitin Gadkari led Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is hopeful that it should be able to cross the target to constructing 11,000 kilometres of national highways by 31 March. This comes even as the first two months saw the construction come down to a grinding halt due to the lockdown restrictions.
Meanwhile, in a sign that the upswing in national highway building is likely to continue in the coming times, the overall awarding of new such projects has witnessed a surge of more than 200 per cent in the ongoing financial year, standing at 7,597 kilometres compared to 3,474 kilometres in the year-ago period.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
