The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will buy back key highway projects from private players in order to expand their capacity to meet increased traffic demands and develop some of them as economic corridors under the Bharatmala programme.
The buyback involves 20 National Highway and 19 state highway projects totally running to 3,160 kilometres. While the total cost of the 20 NH projects is estimated at least Rs 8,200 crore, cost of the state highways is yet to be worked out.
The projects that have been identified include the much-delayed Muzaffarnagar-Haridwar and Ambala-Chandigarh stretches in north India and Tada-Nallore highway in Andhra Pradesh and Salem-Namakkal in Tamil Nadu.
Out of the the 19 identified state highways, a maximum of eight fall in Rajasthan followed by four each in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
