In a decision that will provide a fillip to the generation of ocean energy sector in India, Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy R K Singh today (22 August) cleared a proposal to declare ocean energy as renewable energy.
India has a huge coastline and consequently holds a vast potential for ocean energy generation. Ocean energy includes wave, tidal and ocean thermal energy among others with most of the potential having remained untapped.
The decision will help the sector grow as it will enable DISCOMs and other service providers buy electricity generated from ocean energy route to meet their Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPOs). RPOs are obligations binding such companies and large consumers to meet a certain percentage of their requirements from renewable sources.
Earlier, the government had taken a decision to re-classify large hydroelectric power plants as renewable energy sources following stagnation in growth in the sector. Earlier, only hydro power plants with less than 25 MW capacity were treated as renewable sources.

Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
