Google will soon launch its ‘Shopping’ Tab in India, that will direct users to e-commerce websites. The Shopping Tab is expected to be piloted soon and launched by the end of the year.
Google is already reaching out to players such as Flipkart, Paytm Mall and Snapdeal to be involved in this. Apart from large e-commerce websites, Google is also expected to include its large network of registered small and medium enterprises or SMEs like neighbourhood kirana stores to high-end handicraft stores. These enterprises need not be registered on Amazon or Flipkart, as reported by ET.
Similar to its News or Images tab, users can search for products that they want, on a large number of websites, having a high degree of control on choosing product listing using filters on all of them at once. From the seller’s side, anyone with a product feed can plug into Google’s merchant centre to be listed on the shopping tab.
Google wants an open ecosystem that includes partners of all shapes and sizes such as offline, online, pureplay and omnichannel.
With over 80-85 million online shoppers, India is an important market for Google, which makes it as a game-changer.
Google’s foray into product search comes at a time when the tech giant is said to be losing market share to Amazon on product searches in the US, which translates into declining ad revenues.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
