The Chief Justice of India S A Bobade led Supreme Court (SC) bench on Wednesday (22 January) refused to stay the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) until the Narendra Modi led central government puts forth its arguments in the apex court, Hindustan Times has reported.
The SC has thus granted the centre four weeks time for replying to the 144 odd petitions which have been filed in this matter. The petitions seek varying redressals from challenging CAA’s constitutional validity to putting forth a declaration that the act is unconstitutional.
Out of the 144 petitions, 60 of them are said to have been served on union and Attorney General K K Venugopal had earlier argued against passing any interim order until the centre has been heard in the matter.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
