The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has approved 48 seaplane routes in Kerala, marking a significant boost for the state’s tourism sector. The routes have been allocated to SpiceJet, IndiaOne Air, MehalK, and PMU, reported The Times Of India.

State Tourism Minister PR Mohamed Riyas stated that this will be a significant boost to tourism.

He recalled the state's previous efforts, saying, "As part of this, a trial seaplane flight from Kochi to Mattupetty in Idukki was conducted, which was received with great enthusiasm by the community."

Riyas emphasised that the administration is still working to overcome regulatory barriers to the project's implementation. "I am happy to share that Kerala has been granted 48 routes for seaplanes," He added.

Although the exact routes have yet to be announced, they are expected to connect Lakshadweep to the mainland, as well as connect international airports with inland destinations with lakes suitable for waterdromes, such as Kovalam, Ashtamudi, Vembanad, Kumarakom, Punnamada, Bolgatty, Malampuzha, and Kasaragod.

Officials will next construct waterdromes to enable seaplanes to land and passengers to board and disembark.

These routes will be served by small aircraft capable of carrying between 10 and 25 passengers.

Riyas also noted preparations for supporting infrastructure are underway. Further steps are progressing, he said. “The LDF government has allocated funds in the budget for the seaplane project. The seaplane project through the dams will unite everyone to make it a reality in future Kerala.”

The project forms part of the Union Civil Aviation Ministry’s UDAN scheme, which aims to enhance regional connectivity across the country.
