In a fresh move to improve the upkeep and aesthetics of Delhi’s public infrastructure, the Public Works Department (PWD) is set to approach major companies headquartered in the national capital to participate in its adoption scheme for flyovers, foot overbridges, and road stretches, officials said.

Under this initiative, private firms can “adopt” public assets taking responsibility for their maintenance, beautification, and cleanliness in return for limited advertising rights on the adopted structures.

“We plan to directly approach the private companies which have offices in the national capital for our adoption policy of flyovers,” a senior PWD official was quoted as saying in the PTI report.

The official added that the department will soon begin meetings and outreach to select firms. Feedback from these interactions will help shape the next phase of the scheme.

The plan builds on a high-level decision taken in July this year, during a meeting chaired by PWD Minister Parvesh Verma, to promote large-scale infrastructure proposals under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The move comes as the department grapples with funding constraints that have previously led to delays and cost overruns in major public works.

Officials said the ‘adopt-a-flyover’ project is intended to ensure better upkeep and introduce design solutions that are sustainable, inclusive, and reflective of each location’s unique urban character.

PWD has already identified around 80,000 square metres of space beneath 90 flyovers, including key stretches such as the Africa Avenue, Chirag Delhi, IIT, Moti Bagh, Punjabi Bagh, Rani Jhansi, Shahdara, and Wazirabad flyovers.

Additionally, 25 major road stretches are being shortlisted for adoption under a similar policy. Issues related to roads, central verges, and footpaths will be promptly reported to engineers-in-charge for timely rectification, officials added.
