In a major leap for electric mobility, France has unveiled the world's first highway capable of wirelessly charging electric vehicles (EVs) while they are in motion, Indian Express reported.

The 1.5-kilometre stretch, located just outside Paris near the A10 motorway, marks a global first in large-scale dynamic charging infrastructure.

The project allows buses, cars, and heavy-duty trucks to recharge their batteries as they drive, potentially redefining the future of long-distance EV travel.

The system has been independently verified by Gustave Eiffel University laboratories, confirming it can deliver over 200 kW of continuous power, peaking at 300 kW — comparable to some of the world’s fastest stationary chargers, such as Tesla’s V3 Supercharger.

The highway is embedded with copper coils beneath the asphalt, which generate a magnetic field to transfer power to vehicles equipped with special receivers.

The technology functions similarly to wireless phone charging, but on a much larger scale.

Because it relies on electromagnetic induction rather than physical connections, the system operates reliably in all weather conditions, including rain, ice, or snow.

According to ArenaEV, the self-charging road added significant driving range within minutes of testing, suggesting that the innovation could address one of the biggest challenges facing EV adoption — range anxiety.

Experts say the technology could eventually enable lighter, cheaper electric vehicles, as future models might require smaller batteries.

Unlike traditional charging stations, the wireless charging setup has no moving parts, reducing maintenance costs and risks of mechanical failure. Developed by Israeli tech firm Electreon, the project aligns with the French Ministry of Transport’s vision to install 9,000 km of wireless charging roads by 2035.
