‘Rename Delhi As Indraprastha’: Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal Writes To Amit Shah

Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to rename Delhi as “Indraprastha,” citing the city’s deep-rooted cultural and civilisational heritage, the Indian Express reported.

He has also proposed that Old Delhi Railway Station be renamed “Indraprastha Junction” and the international airport as “Indraprastha Airport.”

“Delhi’s history is not merely thousands of years old; it is a living embodiment of Indian civilisation and the glorious legacy of the city of Indraprastha, established by the Pandavas,” Khandelwal stated.

He added that the ancient city, located along the Yamuna, was one of the most prosperous, beautiful, and well-organised cities during the Mahabharata era.

Khandelwal has also reached out to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, and Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, seeking their support for renaming Delhi as Indraprastha.

He proposed that statues of the Pandavas be installed at a significant site in the capital to honour them as the city’s founders.

He emphasised that Delhi’s heritage is rooted in principles of righteousness, justice, and public welfare, reflecting its identity as the spiritual centre of Indian civilisation. According to him, restoring the name Indraprastha would revive this historical and cultural legacy, bringing recognition to its ancient origins.

Khandelwal believes that the initiative would mirror efforts made in Ayodhya, Kashi, Prayagraj, and Ujjain to reclaim their traditional heritage and would further Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader vision of cultural renewal across India.

“The time has come to restore to our capital its original name and identity,” he stated.
