Manikandan, a Congress leader from Dindigul in Tamil Nadu has sparked controversy by threatening to cut off the tongue of a judge who delivered the verdict in a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi.
Gandhi was convicted and sentenced to two years in jail in March for his "How come all thieves have Modi surname?” remark.
A case has been filed against Manikandan under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) IT cell head Amit Malviya has slammed the Congress over the remarks and called for the courts to hold Rahul Gandhi accountable for his party's threatening behavior towards the judiciary.
"TN Congress leader says that once the party came to power, they would 'cut off the tongue' of the judge who gave the verdict against Rahul Gandhi. Will the courts must take suo moto cognisance and hold Rahul Gandhi accountable for his party men threatening the judiciary?" Malviya tweeted.
