Larsen and Toubro (L&T) have secured two contracts worth nearly Rs 770 crore from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) for phase II project operations, comprising the production and installation of overhead equipment, electrical, and remote monitoring and control systems.
The Chennai Metro Phase II project, with a length of approximately 116 km across the city, is being built at a cost of Rs 61,843 crore.
It will have three corridors, namely Madhavaram to SIPCOT (corridor 3), Light House to Poonamallee (corridor 4) and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (corridor 5), with both elevated and underground work in progress at various locations in the city.
Additionally, CMRL has already started working on the supply of trains, signalling, telecom, electrical systems, and other project-related contracting activities.
L&T has been granted a contract of Rs 533.87 crore by CMRL for the design, fabrication, supply, installation, and commissioning of receiving substations (RSS), auxiliary substations (ASS), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) for parts of corridors 3 and 5.
According to CMRL, "the overall design of the electrical system will be centred on supplying safe, dependable, and stable electricity, as well as efficient performance, in order to provide uninterrupted service."
This contract will entail delivering a well-built and dependable power supply for a piece of corridor 3 (Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur) and a minor stretch of corridor 5 (Madhavaram Milk Colony to CMBT).
The second contract for the design, manufacturing, supply, installation and commissioning of overhead equipment for the phase II project, worth Rs 239.41 crore, also went to L&T for the same sections, according to The Hindu report.
