A newly built flyover in Yelahanka has been named after Veer Savarkar by the B Y Yediyurappa led BJP government. This has soon sparked protests from the opposition parties of Congress and JD(S), Hindustan Times has reported.
Congress leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah has opposed this move by saying that the flyover should have been named after a freedom fighter from the state. Former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy too made a similar point.
BJP spokesperson S Prakash countered the criticism by saying, “Why Indira canteens? Why Rajiv Gandhi hospital? Savarkar is a giant amongst our freedom fighters. It is only a token of respect for such a great soul who sacrificed for the country”.
The flyover will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Yediyurappa on Thursday (28 May) which is the 137th birth anniversary of Veer Savarkar.
The 400 metre long flyover has been built at a cost of Rs 34 crore and BBMP too has passed a resolution approving its name.
