The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has announced the development of the lightest bulletproof jacket capable of protecting against the highest threat level 6, according to report by NDTV.
The Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE) in Kanpur has achieved this feat by creating a bulletproof jacket that is capable of withstanding 7.62 x 54 R API ammunition, which corresponds to Level 6 of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) 17051.
The Ministry of Defence stated that the jacket underwent successful testing at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh, adhering to BIS 17051-2018 standards.
This jacket is the result of a new design approach that utilises innovative materials and processes.
The front Hard Armour Panel (HAP) of the jacket is capable of stopping multiple hits (06 shots) of 7.62 x 54 R API (Sniper rounds) in both In-conjunction with (ICW) and Standalone design.
The front HAP is ergonomically designed, consisting of a monolithic ceramic plate with polymer backing, enhancing wearability and comfort during operations. The areal density of the ICW Hard Armour Panel (HAP) and standalone HAP is less than 40 kg/m2 and 43 kg/m2, respectively.
The Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO congratulated DMSRDE for the successful development of this lightest bulletproof jacket designed to protect against the highest threat level.
