Congress was the ruling party of Mizoram until 2018 but has now been reduced to a single MLA in the state in the recently held elections.
Notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which sent its first MLA to Mizoram assembly only in 2018, won two seats in the 2023 elections, surpassing Congress.
Congress first came to power in the 1972-formed state in 1984 and since then, has formed a government in the state four times, the last being in the 2013 election, by winning 34 seats in the 40-seat assembly.
The Congress' decline has been steep as it won only five seats in the 2018 election when BJP ally Mizo National Front (MNF) formed the government and now has come to one seat.
Interestingly, in the election results announced yesterday, Congress could win government only in Telangana, facing defeat from BJP in three states- Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
