The Cuddalore District police on Tuesday arrested a 17-year-old polytechnic student under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act on charges of tying thaali’ (mangalsutra) around the neck of a 16-year-old school girl at a bus stop near Chidambaram in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu.

The video of the incident went viral on social media with netizens urging authorities to initiate necessary action.

The district police and the District Child Protection Unit launched an investigation after the video of the act went viral and finally, the police arrested the boy on Tuesday.

Based on police investigation, the boy was arrested and sent him to a juvenile observation home while the minor girl was taken to the office of the Child Welfare Committee for counselling.

The police had earlier arrested a 51-year-old man for amplifying the video on various social media platform. He was booked under various sections of the Juvenile Justice Act, Prevention of Women Harassment Act, and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The boy and girl reportedely belong to the Scheduled Castes].
