The 12th Annual Edition of the Demographia World Urban Areas Report came out recently. The below charts detail some of the important information about Indian Urban Agglomerations i.e. UAs (Cities) present in the report.
#1 Contrary to popular belief, it is Delhi and not Mumbai which is the most populous Urban Agglomeration. The Delhi UA includes Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad while that of Mumbai includes Thane and Navi Mumbai. Two cities from Gujarat : Surat and Ahmedabad are in the list of the Top Ten Urban Areas.
#2 Of the Top 10, four urban areas- Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore are mega agglomerations with population exceeding 10 million. Of the ten in the list, only two i.e. Surat and Ahmedabad and Surat are not capitals of any state reflecting their economic strength.
#3 Mumbai UA is the most dense with 26,000 people/sq. km . Surat surprisingly comes in second at 24400 people/ sq. km closely followed by another city from Gujarat: Ahmedabad.
