In the coming years, the Chennai Metro Rail Phase II will be extended to Parandur, where a greenfield airport is proposed.
Chennai Metro phase II spans 118.9 kilometres and is expected to add another 93 kilometres to the line.
According to CMRL officials, a consultant will soon be appointed to conduct a comprehensive feasibility assessment for the extension and draft a report with recommendations.
The route to Parandur will likely include fewer stations than previous sections after covering the main districts.
There will be a wider separation between stations; for now, only high-traffic areas will be developed by CMRL.
An official said that stations could be established later if needed.
The expansion of Metro Phase II consists of three corridors, namely Corridor -3 - From Madhavaram to SIPCOT (45.8 km), Corridor - 4 - From Lighthouse to Poonamalle Bypass (26.1 km), Corridor - 5 - From Madhavaram at Sholinganallur (47 km). The estimated cost of the project is Rs 63,246 crore.
According to The Hindu report, Corridor 4 will be extended to Parandur (50 kilometres), Corridor 5 will be extended to Avadi via Thirumangalam and Mogappair (17 kilometres), and Corridor 3 will be extended from Siruseri to Kilambakkam Bus Terminus via Kelambakkam (26 km).
The Metro Rail will be extended from the Chennai airport to Kilambakkam, where a bus terminal will soon be built.
The CMRL has presented the State government with a detailed work report.
“We have just floated a request for a proposal to select a consultant for these corridors. The consultant will go through the existing reports, such as a comprehensive mobility plan, the present transport routes and development plans. The consultant will come back to us with a report in a few months,” an official said, The Hindu report added.
Tamil Nadu's minister of industries, Thangam Thennarasu, said on 20 August, that the construction of the proposed Parandur Greenfield Airport would be completed by 2028.
The project is estimated to cost 20,000 crore rupees.
The state government has chosen Parandur, 69 kilometres from Chennai, as the location for a new airport that will be built on 4,700 acres to accommodate passenger traffic for the next 30 to 35 years.
