Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has commenced power generation from the world's largest renewable energy project in Khavda, Gujarat by activating 551 megawatt (MW) of solar power.
India’s largest renewable energy (RE) company, AGEL, achieved this milestone within 12 months of commencing work on the Khavda park, starting with the development of basic infrastructure, including roads and connectivity, and creating a self-sustaining social ecosystem.
Spanning across 726 sq-km within the challenging terrain of the Rann desert, the Khavda RE park is poised to generate 30 GW of power, powering 16.1 million homes and cutting 58 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
The planned capacity is expected to be operationalised in the next five years. When completed, the Khavda RE park will be the largest renewable energy installation in the world.
Khavda, located in the Kutch district of Gujarat, is a promising location for wind and solar energy projects.
With its abundant solar irradiation reaching approximately 2,060 kWh/m2, the area stands out as an ideal locale for solar power generation. Furthermore, Khavda boasts one of India's most favorable wind resources, with speeds averaging around 8 m/s.
Over the last five years, Adani Green conducted multiple studies, such as geotechnical investigation, seismic study, and detailed feasibility studies, amongst others, before embarking on the development of this site.
This record-setting gigascale plant, unparalleled in the realm of clean energy, is anticipated to accelerate India’s ambitious goals of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and carbon neutrality.
