Indian Railways is conducting test runs for door-to-door delivery service for both individual and bulk customers.
The national transporter is planning to have an application for the purpose. They will provide customer receipts with QR codes that will make it easier for them to track their consignments.
The estimated charge and the time required to deliver a consignment will be provided on the app or the concerned website.
The Indian Railways is looking to rope in India Post and certain other players to enhance their delivery services.
They are also eyeing to capitalize on the rapidly-growing logistics business, which has seen the emergence of several new private sector entrants in recent times.
The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC) will be initiating the first such delivery service in Delhi-NCR and the Sanand sector in Gujarat by June-July 2022.
The DFCC has started in-house trials of the service whereas another pilot of the same has already been envisioned in Mumbai.
The basic idea behind the plan is to provide the service at rates lower than what it will take to transport the consignments via road.
“We are targeting white goods, small items as well as aggregators who can avail of the service,” a DFCC official was quoted in a report by the Times of India.
