Zoram Thar, a semi-political group that will be contesting the Mizoram Assembly elections on 28 November from 24 seats, believes that they are a “spiritual party” that wants to enter politics. President of the group, Zaichhawna Hlawndo, has spoken his mind on how he wants “Jesus to control” the Assembly.
By profession, he has been an evangelist who has worked across India, US and the UK. Hlawndo will be contesting from Serchhip and Aizwal West-I constituency for the upcoming polls.
The Hindu quoted him as saying, “Zoram Thar, meaning New Mizoram, was founded by Rev. VL Nithanga in 1994 but lost its way in the political quagmire and became defunct. Ours is a new group guided by divinity to clean up the corrupt political system and establish god’s government.”
In 2012, after he made up his mind to contest elections, he returned to Mizoram. In 2016 February, Zoram Thar was formed with the help of a few leaders from the church. He calls his candidates "apostles”.
The candidates also consist of his neighbours and his daughters, who are in their late 20s. Alongside the BJP, it is only Zoram Thar that has fielded as many women. He said “god” told them to contest these elections.
