According to data revealed by internet security solutions provider, QuickHeal, around 2,000 malware and 3,000 ‘potentially unwanted’ applications (PUAs) are being detected every day in the country’s Android devices, as reported by The Hindu BusinessLine (BL).
“The PUA family comprised 46.2 per cent of the total detections in the year,” said Sanjay Katkar, Joint MD and Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Quick Heal Technologies. The company has stated that over 6.31 lakh threats were detected among both individual and enterprise Android users in Q1 (April-June 2018).
Commenting on the lack of adequate security measures taken by users, Mr Katkar noted: “This is a major security loophole. Smartphones hold a lot of personal and financial information and are increasingly being used to transact online. The failure to install adequate mobile security puts all of this data at risk.”
Recently it was reported that Google, the company behind the Android platform, removed over 13 mobile apps from Google Play Store. These apps, which were installing malware on devices, had infected over 5,60,000 Android devices.
However, the renewed security efforts of Google are paying off since data released by the company has revealed that devices running the latest versions of Android had fewer security intrusions than those devices with older versions.
