A proposal to extend reservation for people from Schedule Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies for 10 more years was approved by the union cabinet on Wednesday (4 December).
The central government is going to introduce a bill in the ongoing session of the parliament to extend the reservation for SCs and STs, which was going to expire on 25 January, 2020. Once passed in both the houses, the reservation will be valid until 2030.
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said this was an important step for empowerment and social justice.
Asp per a senior functionary, reservations for these social categories in legislature is decided through constitutional amendments, while state governments have the jurisdiction to provide reservations for members of SC and ST in employment in the respective states.

Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
