Riding high on the successful re-telecast of old classic shows like Ramayana and Mahabharata, the state-owned broadcaster Prasar Bharti has now launched a new channel DD Retro which is dedicated to specifically telecasting old classics, reports Livemint.
Taking to Twitter to announce the launch of its new channel, the public broadcaster tweeted, "To relive the nostalgia of your favourite memorable serials of Doordarshan, watch DD Retro."
The development comes as last week Doordarshan emerged as the most-watched channel of India with its viewership topping the charts and beating all other Hindi-centric channels. The viewership of the channel was reported to spike the highest and beat any other genre in the Hindi-speaking markets at times when the epic Ramayana is aired.
It should be noted that Doordarshan's viewership at the 9 AM and 9 PM slots when Ramayana is aired was found to have grown 60 times over the last two weeks. Similarly, the re-telecast of Mahabharat at 12 PM and 7 PM slots have led to a surge of over 208 times in the viewership.
The Government had previously decreed on all the DTH providers and cable operators to carry all the Doordarshan channels. The telecast of the newly launched DD Retro would also be ensured under the same decree.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
