Bihar Government recently approved a scheme that will award a sum of Rs. 25,000 to every girl who completes her graduation, as reported by All India Radio. The scheme will be applicable to all girls who graduate from 2018 onwards. This is a significant amount since it Bihar’s per capita income stands at Rs. 38,546.
The decision was taken by the state Cabinet, chaired by Bihar’s CM, Nitish Kumar. The Cabinet has allocated Rs. 3,000 crore to the scheme for the current year. Over 1,20,000 girl students are expected to benefit from this.
It should also be noted this scheme is part of the larger government programme that disburses approximately Rs. 54,000 to girls, right from their birth to graduation. Even other states have included cash-transfer schemes to encourage education among girls. West Bengal’s Kanyashree scheme was awarded the United Nations’ highest award for public service in 2017.
The NDA government’s flagship social sector programme, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, aims to prevent female infanticide and promote education among girls. Construction of girls hostels has also been expedited in order to avoid dropouts in higher education.
