In a major development, the globally renowned skiing destination of Gulmarg in the Baramulla district of Kashmir Valley is all set to host the National Winter Games under the union government’s Khelo India programme, which is aimed at development of sports across the nation, reports India Today.
The national sporting event will go on in the Valley for five days, beginning 7 March.
Reviewing the arrangements of the scheduled mega event, Secretary for Youth Services and Sports Sarmad Hafeez held a meeting on Monday (10 February) with concerned departments and stakeholders and asked the officials to form committees for putting in place arrangements for the smooth conduct of the event including boarding, lodging and transport facilities for the guests and players, besides publicity of the event.
Hafeez also directed the Tourism Department authorities to ensure wide publicity of the event in roadshows which are currently going on across the country.
The National Winter Games will witness 30 events across four disciplines including snowboarding, snow skiing, cross country and snow-show. Meanwhile, events like snow cycling and other such games will also be organised by the administration for the local children from the region.
