Congress party interim president Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh visited Tihar jail today to meet former finance minister P Chidambaram, reports NDTV.
Chidambaram has been in prison since 5 September in connection with INX media scam. He took to Twitter to express his gratitude to the two Congress party stalwarts.
"I am honoured that Sonia Gandhi and Dr Manmohan Singh called on me today. As long as the party is strong and brave, I will also be strong and brave," his family tweeted on his behalf.
The visit signals that the Congress party stands strong behind Chidambaram despite the serious allegations of corruption and money laundering. Last week, Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ahmed Patel had also met the former finance minister.
Chidambaram celebrated his 74th birthday on Monday and "is in good health" as per a PTI report. The former union minister has been active on Twitter from the jail, taking jibes at the government on various issues.
P Chidambaram’s son Karti, another accused in the case, told media that his father and family were extremely grateful to Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh for visiting him and for extending their support. “It's a big boost for us in this fight,”he said after meeting his father at Tihar Jail.
