The Indian National Congress (INC) announced on Sunday (9 August) that Sonia Gandhi shall continue as the interim president of the party till a "proper procedure" is implemented in the "not too distant future" to elect a party chief, reports Financial Express.
The assertion from the party comes as Sonia Gandhi's tenure as interim president has officially come to an end today (10 August) with the completion of a year since her assumption of the post. She had taken over the command of the party after her son Rahul had given up on party's post taking responsibility of the party's decimation in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, which had been fought under his leadership.
Speaking for the party, national spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that though it’s true that Gandhi's tenure has come to an end, it doesn't imply that the post shall automatically fall vacant. He asserted that Gandhi is the president and that she will continue until such time as a proper procedure is implemented.
Singhvi said, "But be rest assured that there is a process which goes through the CWC (Congress Working Committee). This will be followed in the near future and a result will emerge."
He further added, the procedure being pursued by the party is written in its constitution and the party is committed to following it.
