Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel who is considered a close aide of interim president Sonia Gandhi has been summoned by the Income Tax department in connection with a Rs 400 crore havala transaction, CNBC TV18 has reported.
The summons were issued on 11 February and Patel was scheduled to appear before the Income Tax department on 14 February. He reportedly failed to do so by citing health issues.
As per reports, Patel was admitted to a Faridabad hospital over breathing problems. Fresh summons are expected to be issued against Patel soon.
In the past Patel was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a Rs 5,700 crore bank fraud case involving money laundering accusations against Sterling Biotech.
