A special court in Delhi on Tuesday (15 October) agreed to the request of Enforcement Directorate (ED) for the custodial interrogation of former finance minister (FM) P Chidambaram, who is currently lodged in Tihar jail in connection with the INX Media case, reports NDTV.
The ED, which has accused Chidambaram of money laundering in the INX Media case, had reportedly moved two applications on Monday (14 October) to formally arrest the former FM and seek his custody.
According to the report, the special court gave the agency two options. The first option was to question Chidambaram at the premises of the court for half an hour and then move application for his custody. The second option was to send him to Tihar jail for now and arresting him from there.
The agency initially wanted to question Chidambaram at Rouse Avenue court premises and then arrest him. However, upon Judge’s intervention saying that dignity of the person should be considered, the ED opted for the second option.
The former FM will be arrested in the morning and will be later produced in court around 4 pm, when the agency will apply for his custody.
Chidambaram was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on 21 August and has been in the judicial custody since 5 September in connection with the INX Media case.
