United States (US) Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been slammed for having invoked the Bible for justifying US policy decisions.
In a move that has been generating waves in the US, the government has begun deporting illegal immigrants from the country. The migrants’ children, however, face an uncertain future and are kept in shelters as the parents are deported. Several reports of families being separated at the borders have been pouring in leading to massive outrage in the US.
Sessions drew fire as he went on to justify the move through a passage in the Bible, NBC has reported.
"Persons who violate the law of our nation are subject to prosecution ... I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13 to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained the government for his purposes,
Orderly and lawful processes are good in themselves ... and protect the weak and it protects the lawful," Sessions said.
While the US government has claimed that the shelters care for the children in a ‘decent and proper way’, many critics say that the shelters closely resemble prisons, and that the facilities are cramped.
Sessions was replying to questions that the move has even been slammed by Church leaders who had written to the White House to protect families at the border.
