Reliance Jio added 8.26 million wireless subscribers in June, as other telcos continued to lose users, the Financial Express reports. Recently merged Vodafone-Idea lost 4.14 million subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel, who lost 29,883 users.
According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) data, the subscriber base rose by little from 1,161.86 million in May to 1,165.46 in June. Apart from state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mukesh Ambani led Jio, all telecom operators lost subscribers.
Since Vodafone-Idea and Bharti Airtel announced their minimum recharge plans of Rs 35 per month rental, the duo companies have been losing subscribers, despite which the results of the plan have been much kinder for Airtel rather than Vodafone-Idea.
Airtel had a slower loss of subscribers in June, with 1.5 million users, compared to Vodafone-Idea’s 5.69 subscribers. Despite the loss, Vodafone-Idea continues to be the largest operator with a subscriber base of 383.41 million (32.9 per cent), compared to Jio’s 331.25 subscribers (28.4 per cent), and Airtel’s 320.35 million (27.4 per cent).
BSNL’s base stood at 116.16 million (9.98 per cent) at the end of June. Airtel, however, continues to lead with the maximum proportion of active wireless subscribers at 98.50 per cent.
