Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV has already taken pole position in this week’s Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC’s) data, and appears to be lifting the televised English news industry along with him. A preliminary glance at the BARC data as shown below indicates that with the arrival of Republic TV, the cumulative impressions of the top five English news channels have risen three folds approximately with 4282 impressions in week 19 compared to 1638 in the week prior to that.
Though Republic TV has left other English channels far behind, their impressions have nevertheless seen a steady rise. Times Now nearly doubled its weekly impressions, from 645 to 1148, while NDTV went from 290 weekly impressions to 352 weekly impressions. CNN News18 also saw its weekly impressions rise from 207 to 315.
India Today seems to be the overall loser, with weekly impressions reducing from 368 to 350.
Rather than be perturbed by the rise of Arnab Goswami and Republic TV, his contemporaries should actually be thanking him for increasing the viewership of the English news industry!
