Signalling the government’s seriousness on the issue, Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the government will ensure that all illegal immigrants are deported from the country, ANI has reported.
"We will identify all the illegal immigrants and infiltrators living on every inch of this country and deport them as per the international law," Amit Shah said in the Rajya Sabha.
The statement comes in the backdrop of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise going on in Assam which is set to announce the final list of foreigners in the state on 31 July. 40 lakh of Assam almost 3.2 crore population have been identified as foreigners in the draft NRC. 1.02 lakh more names are to be added to the foreigners list as per reports.
The Home Minister also informed that additional infrastructure and security forces have been deployed to the borders to check illegal immigrants. However, some are still able to cross over to India due to the difficult to monitor terrain along the borders.
Illegal immigrants are dealt by the Central government under Section 3 of the The Foreigners Act, 1946 which gives the Centre the power to detain and deport such persons.
