The Railways’ UTS mobile application for buying unreserved tickets online would be available nationwide from Thursday (8 November), Economic Times has reported. Additionally the buying of unreserved tickets on all non-suburban sections across all zonal railways has been made available from 1 November, which will reduce the waiting time for passengers standing in queues, the government body said in a statement.
The passengers can get tickets by furnishing the details required after downloading the application and registering. The user would then be given a log-in ID from which they can book tickets, but the user has to be within a five-kilometre radius of the source station to buy a ticket.
Users can also buy monthly passes and platform tickets via the app. The facility to buy unreserved tickets, including season tickets and platform tickets, is available through 'UTSONMOBILE' app on Android, iOS and Windows phones.
The number of passengers using the app to book their tickets rose from 1.8 lakh passengers per day to 4.75 lakh per day in ten months while the revenue generated from the app currently stands at Rs 45 lakh per day.
"The number of passengers availing tickets using the app is around two per cent of the total tickets booked. So there is a huge scope of generating revenue through this," said Member Traffic, Girish Pillai. Railways sold a record 7,483 million unreserved tickets across its network in 2017-2018.
