The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating the launch of a T10 format cricket league, which might kick off between September and October next year, according to a report by Moneycontrol on Friday.
The report added that BCCI secretary, Jay Shay, is currently working on a blueprint for the proposed league.
This comes as the current shortest cricket league, the 20-over Indian Premier League (IPL), is witnessing an increase in both viewership and valuation.
A report released by Brand Finance earlier this week indicated that the IPL has now achieved decacorn status with a valuation of $10.7 billion.
According to the Moneycontrol report, franchises presently hold the power to reject any new framework proposed by the BCCI that mirrors the IPL.
According to people aware of the developments, as cited in the report, there are several key elements that BCCI should take into account prior to initiating this novel league.
These encompass having an age bracket to prevent it from overshadowing the IPL's fame, and strategies to ensure the participation of the best white-ball cricketers in the league.
It added that currently, cricket boards are not earning enough through bilateral series, and this new series, and a potential revenue-sharing model, may help these boards financially. However, it may bring more danger to the 50-over format.
India may not have an urgent need for financial incentive. According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Saudi Arabia has expressed interest in investing in the IPL.
The kingdom has proposed a plan to inject up to $5 billion into the league, spearheading its expansion into other countries in a manner akin to the English Premier League or the European Champions League.
The BCCI has not yet released an official statement regarding the new league.
