Even as the Gujarat government has begun putting up infrastructure for Ahmedabad to bid for hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, the state government has indicated that it could bid for Ahmedabad hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
This comes amidst Australia' Victoria announcing on Tuesday (July 18) about its decision to pull out of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth citing ballooning costs. Victoria state in Australia has withdrawn as the host for the 2026 Commonwealth Games due to the rising budget.
Notably, the government had initially allocated AU$2.6 billion for the event.
Meanwhile, the state government in Gujarat has set a target of all projects related to the Olympic Games bid to be completed by 2026.
The BJP's top leadership has instructed the state government to start working on all associated projects for the bid simultaneously.
Ahmedabad is planning to bid for the 2036 Summer Olympics and will develop the stadium and the Naranpura Sports Complex with facilities for various Olympic sports. These two venues will host the majority of the Olympic sporting events.
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, which will cover an area of 236 acres at Motera, is expected to cost approximately Rs 4,600 crore. It will have the necessary infrastructure to host up to 20 sports disciplines, spanning over 93 lakh square feet of built-up area. T
he project also includes the construction of 3,000 apartments to accommodate athletes, support staff, sports officials, and others.
To ensure the progress of the projects for Ahmedabad's bid to host the 2036 Olympics, the state government has formed two committees earlier this year. These committees will monitor the implementation of the projects.
