The rollout of new NCERT textbooks for all classes, as part of the revised syllabus, is expected within the next two years, according to a report from The New Indian Express.
This comes in the backdrop of the criticisms faced by the Narendra Modi government for not bringing educational reforms and textbook updates despite 10 years of rule.
The ministry has also instructed the NCERT to conduct an annual review and overhaul of its textbooks to incorporate updated information.
Currently, new books for Classes 3 and 6 have been distributed to schools and made available on the NCERT website.
The upcoming NCERT textbooks will adhere to the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE), which has been developed based on the vision outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The NCERT is currently in the process of preparing textbooks comprising a total of 130 titles covering Classes 1 through 12.
"It is expected that the textbooks, in accordance with the new curriculum, will be ready for all classes by 2026. The complete release of textbooks for all classes in line with the NCF is estimated to take approximately two years," as per the same report.
Officials highlighted that the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been periodically revising and updating content since 2017. They have now been instructed to conduct this review annually.
"In a rapidly evolving world, it is crucial that textbooks remain up-to-date. The NCERT has been directed to conduct an annual review and update them before the start of each new academic session," the report continued.
