In a significant development, Congressman Rich McCormick, a Republican representative from Georgia, announced his plan to introduce a bipartisan resolution in the United States Congress, reaffirming India's territorial sovereignty in the face of incursions by China.
Congressman McCormick, a former member of the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy with over 20 years of service, revealed his intention on Twitter after meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The resolution comes at a time when India and China find themselves in a tense military standoff along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. While some disengagement has been achieved in eastern Ladakh, new standoffs have been reported in Arunachal Pradesh, and the significant deployment of forces and heavy equipment by both countries remains unchanged.
Congressman McCormick took to Twitter to share his plans, stating, "Tomorrow I am introducing a bipartisan resolution reaffirming India's territorial sovereignty against incursions from communist China. Our nations will forge a bright future together!"
The move by the Republican representative underscores the growing concerns within the US Congress regarding China's actions in the Indo-Pacific region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent address to the US Congress on June 22 highlighted the issue without directly naming China.
He pointed out Beijing's coercion, confrontation, and debt-trap diplomacy, echoing the sentiment expressed by Congressman McCormick.
The bipartisan resolution is expected to garner support from lawmakers across party lines, further emphasizing the importance of addressing China's encroachments on India's territorial integrity.
As tensions persist between India and China, the introduction of this bipartisan resolution serves as a strong statement of support for India and underscores the close ties between the two nations.
