In a significant development in the American political landscape, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have secured their respective parties' nominations for the presidential race, following a series of primary victories on Tuesday.
These victories, which occurred in Georgia, Mississippi, and Washington state, have paved the way for a highly anticipated rematch in the upcoming general election.
The triumphs of Biden and Trump were widely expected, as neither candidate encountered significant opposition within their parties.
However, the overwhelming nature of their victories has ensured that both will have the delegate support required to officially receive their party's nomination at the national conventions slated for this summer.
In a statement, President Biden expressed his gratitude for the nomination and took the opportunity to critique his opponent.
Biden characterised Trump's campaign approach as one fueled by "resentment, revenge, and retribution," posing what he believes to be a formidable threat to the foundational principles of American democracy.
Trump, in a pre-primary interview with CNBC, acknowledged Biden's impending nomination, while also alluding to the President's age as a potential factor in the race.
Trump remarked, "I assume he’s going to be the candidate. I’m his [Biden's] only opponent other than life, life itself".
