According to reports by Republic World and Dinamalar, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials have seized Rs 70 lakh in cash and foreign currency worth Rs 10 lakh from premises connected to K Ponmudy, who is a senior Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and Higher Education minister in the Tamil Nadu government.
The raids, which started early this morning, are going on in Chennai and Villupuram.
Properties belonging to his son P Gowthamasigamani, a Lok Sabha MP from Kallakurichi, are also being searched.
While the ED has not officially stated the reasons for the raid, Ponmudy is known to be facing allegations of land grab and misusing his position to grant permits for quarrying of red sand.
